He was a Hillsborough County probate judge but came to the Manatee River and claimed SE 1/4 of Section 14 under the Armed Occupation Act of 1842. This land later flanked the DeSoto Bridge. When the 3rd Seminole War began with the raids of 1855, he led the local Citizen's Committee to plan strategies for coping with the crisis. He was the Hillsborough County delegate to the 1861 Secession Convention while another Manatee River resident, Ezekial Glazier, represented Manatee.
