He attended a preparatory school in Jackson, Alabama and then medical school in Mobile, Alabama. In 1912 he graduated from Atlanta's Southern College of Medicine and Surgery. He took post-graduate courses at Tulane and Loyola Universities in New Orleans, at Poly Clinic and Post-Graduate Hospital in New York City and in Chicago's Cook County Hospital. In 1913 he studied at the University of Paris, France. He married Jessie Holder. His first medical practice was treating workers for a large lumber company in Molina, Florida. Around 1925 he and his wife took a trip through south Florida. They were impressed with the beauty and the weather that they found in Bradenton. They built a home of travertine stone near Ware's Creek. Dr. Mason was a member of Kiwanis, the Manatee County Medical Society, the Chamber of Commerce, the Bradenton Country Club and Christ Episcopal Church. He worked as medical advisor to the Selective Service Board during World War II. Because of the wartime shortage of doctors in the county, the few who remained were overworked. He retired in 1954.
