The telegraph was generated by the The Western Union Telegraph Company, which is prominently displayed on the top of the telegraph.The Abbe murder was committed by a gang known as the Sarasota Vigilantes. Abbe, the postmaster and an immigrant to Sarasota from the North, was gunned down in the street by local "Crackers" who believed he was in league with the Disston Railroad interests and planned to displace them from their land and homesteads.
