The community was founded by Johan Peter Wilhelmsen (Americanized as Willemsen) and his wife Sara Jane, who came from Germany before 1860. Johan served in Company K, 7th Florida Infantry during the Civil War. The Wilhelmsen Academy, seen here with it's name on the sign between the windows of the bell tower, was located on Sarasota Avenue (later called 26th Street West). Johan Wilhelmsen deeded the half-acre lot for the school. It was built in 1887 and by 1891 it had 24 students.
