He was born in Briston, Rhode Island on July 20, 1858, the son of Seth and Cordelia Corwin. From age 19 to age 25 he worked in the grocery business in Bristol, then came to the South for his health. He arrived in Sarasota in October 1882. He homesteaded 129 acres, had a farm, a 10-acre orange grove and 75 colonies of bees. In 1895 he sold his farm and moved to Bradenton, starting a grocery business. Two years later he took over He managed it until April 1922, then sold it to Williams Adams of Sarasota. He was the local agent for the Gulf Refining Company of Pittsburg (Gulf Oil Company) from 1901-1925. He retired from business in 1925. He was an Episcopalian and had served as County commissioner and Tax Collector. He was for four years a member of the Bradentown Board of Trade, a Bee Keepers association and member of the Masons, the Knights of Pythias and the Odd Fellows. Obituary of S.C.
