In 1895 he sold his farm and moved to Bradenton, starting a grocery business. Two years later he took over He managed it until April 1922, then sold it to Williams Adams of Sarasota. He was the local agent for the Gulf Refining Company of Pittsburg (Gulf Oil Company) from 1901-1925. He retired from business in 1925. He was an Episcopalian and had served as County commissioner and Tax Collector.
