He worked for a watch and diamond merchant in New York City and became fairly wealthy. After a bout of pneumonia in 1901, he took the advice of his friend Kimball C. Atwood and came to Manatee County. He moved first out near Bethany and later to this home, Maydell, in 1917. He died in 1939. Some of the property later became part of Christian retreat.
