Born in Massachussets, he farmed in Illinois from 1848 - 1887, where he was ordained an elder in the Presbyterian church. He married Ellen Ward in 1869. He then brought his wife and daughters to join sons Pliny and Egbert at Oneco in 1887. He had suffered from rheumatism while in the north, but here he was able to take over the shipping operations of the Royal Palm nursery.
