The two brothers moved to Manatee County in 1975 and had their first tomato harvest in 1976. Rufus had earlier experiece with tomatoes in Texas and California. Larry was born in Wauchula, graduated from Hardee County High School and the University of Florida and became a tomato grower. The packing house occupied 9 acres with 200,000 square feet of buildings. The family owned 4,500 acres of farmland. From 1978 through 1986, Larry served as Manatee County's deputy with the State Agricultural Commission. He died in 1992. Rufus and his four sons continued the tomato business.
