Sawyer) at Bradenton Beach. The letter reads: "the idea and intention of starting a colony of or for winter tourists. He had made trips there and thought it an ideal climate. He had quite a little money and was going to build a hotel at Sarasota and had shipped quite a lot of furniture for the hotel via the Mississippi River - the boat sank and he evidently had no insurance, and I imagine that discouraged him so the project was never carried out- and then later he was murdered. I never knew why but had the idea that the southerners there did not like the idea of starting a colony of northern people - it was such a short time after the civil war and feeling was still bitter - He was a man of strong convictions and did not hesitate to express them - and no doubt made enemies - We always liked him - he used to call at our home and was always interesting and a welcome guest - He was rather eccentric [?], but cordial and pleasant. He seemed to have business away from home most of the time - much as our traveling salesmen have now - I know he sold sewing machines, but do not know if he had other lines of goods - and probably there were times when money was not plentiful-" [end of page] Letter from Mrs. Addie Mills in Topeka Kansas to Grace Whitaker Sawyer (Mrs. S.T.
