The architectural design was unique in the area and attracted much attention. Palmetto Federal was founded around 1958 by farmer Peter S. Harllee and involved almost every important businessman north of the Manatee River. Their first building was on 8th Avenue in Palmetto. They began planning for a Bradenton branch in 1969 and opened this building at 3933 Manatee Avenue West in 1971. In 1982 a new five-story building opened in Palmetto and the company moved into downtown Bradenton in 1983. The company stock was sold to Goldome for $33 per share in August 1983. In July, 1988, a later president, Fred Langford, and directors faced a Federal Grand Jury and in October were forced to pay a $10 million fraud suit involving unpaid bank loans carried on Palmetto's books when sold to Golddome. This Manatee Avenue building remained in use until ca. 2000. It was torn down in late 2003. Goldome Federal Savings became part of the First of America Bank of Florida family on April 15, 1994.
