Central Hotel at Manatee Avenue and Central Avenue. University of South Florida Tampa Library still image eng Central Hotel, run by Miss R. and Miss K. Macintosh, was at the corner of Manatee Avenue and Central Avenue in Manatee. Built by J.A. Mason in 1903, it opened in October 1903, just to the east of the Florida West Shore railway depot. At that point, the Manatee Drug Company moved from the old Masonic Hall building into the Central's ground floor. They used no ice in their soda fountain drinks, but instead stored their soda in ice (a very wise precaution when the water supply that makes the ice is questionable or full of sulfer and other minerals). They had fine cypress wood show cases and carried all the things found in a modern drugstore: toilet articles, stationary, tobacco, cigars, as well as prescriptions. In 1904 a shell sidewalk connected the Central Hotel to the Wiggins store on the eastern end of Manatee. The Manatee City Park across the street from the hotel was fenced in October 1904 and a gazebo was built there. For a time, until 1910, the Manatee Banking Company occupied space on the first floor of the hotel until it moved into the 1910 Davis Building across the street. During World War I, 1917-1918, "middy-blouse" dances were held for young people in the hotel. Manatee Drug Company changed its name in 1925 to the Pelot's Pharmacy. They moved from the Central Hotel to the empty Manatee Supply Company's spot in the Davis building in 1934, the middle of the Great Depression. By 1931 it was known as the Centralia Hotel. The old name Central Hotel was taken by a building on Old Main Street in Bradenton in the mid-1950s. By 1956 the building in old Manatee was listed as the Kolodoner Apartments, usually occupied by transients. In spite of being very run down in the inflationary 1970s, when it lost it's porch. It was more or less abandoned in the 1980s, but East Bradenton began to revitalize with the late 1990s east county building boom and the old hotel underwent rehabilitation for the 21st Century.
